Description: Funks is the annual homebrew competition put on at SFBC. This competition is unique in its focus on mixed fermentation brewing, sour ales and saison styles. All things that are well suited for SFBV to brew with the Best in Show winners.
The thing about running a home-brew competition focused on sour, funky, and alternative fermentation beers is that the turnaround time for the Best of Show brew can get seriously long. Back in 2018, Chris Potts won our first Funks competition with his barrel-aged Flanders Red Ale. He made the trek from Ottawa to SFBC in the winter of 2019 to recreate his masterpiece, which then spent 18 months in oak barrels before being bottle conditioned for 3 months. Good things take time. The resulting brew is seriously expressive with a zippy carbonation. Look for notes of cherry, oak, and brown sugar, backed by a slightly acetic character
